Immediate dentures information

  1. Immediate dentures are used to replace teeth immediately after an extraction.
  2. The stages of a denture construction are carried out before the extraction of the relevant teeth.
  3. The immediate dentures are an approximate fit and an interim measure to be worn immediately after extraction, until complete healing and reshaping of the gums has finished. This may take 3-6 months.
  4. At this time, when healing is complete a reline of the dentures or a new set of dentures will be required.

A charge will be made for relining or for a new set of dentures at this stage.

Immediately after extraction

1.      Dentures should be left in for 24 hours.

2.      The following day, remove dentures and rinse with warm salt water 4 times a day to aid healing and prevent infection. Replace dentures after this.

3.      If the dentures rub, return to the dentist for an adjustment.

4.      New dentures are always difficult to wear to begin with. Perseverance is the key, especially if you haven’t worn dentures before.

5.      As the dentures are an approximate fit, some looseness is common initially and as healing/reshaping occurs. Denture adhesive may be useful.
